We are all about local foods and helping the small-batch food maker enter and thrive in the market place. Our specialty is working with makers of color and women-owned food businesses. At our core, we are a producer-led market with a unique grocery model that helps food startups and expanding food producers in Minnesota to bring their finest products directly to you, while working to give back all proceeds to them. We call this co-retail - an artisanal grocery model with potential to create efficiencies and supports that enable these producers to scale and compete well in the marketplace.
Here, shoppers will feel like they are at a farmer’s market, a foodie gift shop, and a small-scale but fully stocked grocery store all at once. What does that mean? It means that shoppers will find handcrafted, small-batch food items for gifts for any occasion; get to know the makers, and buy groceries and ingredients to make a full meal at home.
Creative. Pioneering. Friendly. Kayla, Monique, and Kenny, are always ready to welcome you. Kayla, our Founder, created co-retail to elevate equity in local foods movement, after spending three years as a food producer herself and experiencing firsthand, a system with multiple barriers for women and people of color. She was determined to bring change to the current system. Prior to this, Kayla spent 20+ years in corporate and philanthropic leadership.
The brands here are mostly from makers of color and women-owned businesses. Since we opened in 2017, we have worked with numerous makers gain access to retailers and customers, while retaining all proceeds from their food sales. We call this co-retail, a new way of equipping small food businesses to scale. What's more, these makers have their own mission of doing good for communities - from addressing hunger to domestic violence, mental health, and more.
We integrate food from different cultures and welcome all. Our goal is to ensure that the local, small-batch producers and their products get a chance to equitably compete in the market place.
As a grocery store that uses co-retail, we work to remove the system of controls on pricing and put it more directly into the hands of the producer and the consumer. We partner with for-profits and nonprofits to ensure the producers and their brands get the best possible market opportunities.
